Reviews: Cha-Ginza – Sencha Konnichiwa

Cha Ginza: Cha-Ginza is a retail shop and tea room located in the middle of Ginza, Tokyo. It is a tea shop run by the tea company Uogashi Meicha.

Uogashi Meicha was founded in 1931 in Tsukiji, Tokyo. They have been offering “light but high scented tea” that can be served with various dishes. This was welcomed and appreciated by many restaurants in the Tsukiji area in which Uogashi Meicha’s tea was served.

They were the first to offer free tea for tasting in the Tsukiji Market, which lead to spreading the name of Uogashi Meicha and at the same time, made the tea more accessible to people.

In Shizuoka Prefecture, we have a factory directly operated by Uogashi Meicha. The company is responsible from tea cultivation, processing, to marketing and selling. Their tea has been loved and appreciated by the restaurants in Tsukiji and the customers for 80 years because they highly value the flavor of the tea rather than its appearance, their tea is fukamushi (deep steamed); offer the “fun” aspect of tea by using tea packages designed by illustrators; and holding tea events to simply enjoy the tea.

Approximately 3 grams of tea for 3oz of water at 70C for 1.5 minutes for the first infusion, then 3oz 80-90C water after that for 30 seconds for further infusions.
